‘Cash and Carry’ WaterAid Challenge

Detectronic field service team leaders, Olly Harrison and Sam Rayner, have taken part in the ‘Cash and Carry’ WaterAid Challenge organised by South West Water.

Olly and Sam joined other fundraisers to walk 3 miles around South West Water’s Meldon Reservoir near Okehampton in North Dartmoor. To turn the walk into a challenge, participants carried 20 litres of water to simulate what others less fortunate across the globe have to carry every day just to access clean water.

Explains Olly: “Sam and I are both physically fit and walking 3 miles isn’t a problem to us but carrying 20 litres of water at the same time was hard work – I can’t imagine having to do that every day.”

Adds Sam: “We take it for granted here in the UK that we can turn on a tap and have clean drinking water but there are 748 million people in the world who don’t have this luxury. Olly and I were only too happy to take part in the challenge to raise money and awareness for WaterAid, it’s an excellent charity.”

Concludes Ruth Vinuela from South West Water who organised the challenge: “WaterAid is our adopted charity and we have supported it for over 20 years, raising over £4million with the support of our customers, colleagues and suppliers. We anticipate that we will raise £4,400 thanks to the ‘Cash and Carry’ WaterAid Challenge.”

WaterAid is the UK’s specialist development charity working through partner organisations to help poor people in developing countries achieve sustainable improvements in their quality of life by improved domestic water supply, sanitation and associated hygiene practices.
