Why measure process flows? Wastewater flow monitoring

It’s a good question, and one we’re asked more often than you might think!

First and foremost, accurate process flow monitoring and measurement can deliver significant savings on wastewater and trade effluent charges. Companies operating an industrial process that involves the movement of fluid from one location to another will, more than likely, discharge wastewater from that process into local to rivers, sewers and other water channels.

Any business that discharges wastewater or trade effluent must provide data to its respective Water and Sewerage Company (WASC) and Environmental Agencies so that its disposal charges can be correctly addressed, and it is able to meet its obligations under the Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) Directive.

Many companies don’t have a clear understanding of how their charges have been calculated and the only way for them to know is by accurately monitoring and measuring the volume of water entering and wastewater leaving their plant. By having correct and robust data relating to the entire process not only can savings be made but both operational performance and site safety can be improved by, for example, identifying potential blockages or subtle changes in the temperature or chemical composition of the wastewater.

Our industrial and commercial wastewater monitoring systems, including ultrasonic flow meters, are specifically designed to deliver highly accurate data for collection and analysis either directly by the client or on their behalf by our dedicated datacentre.

In 2017, we launched the ORAKEL System. Incorporating a highly versatile control and display unit that can accommodate up to 16 sensors to measure different flow and quality characteristics it provides a bespoke solution for wastewater and industrial water monitoring environments. The ORAKEL can easily be used as a flow meter with a water flow sensor (or combination of specific sensors) to provide non-contact area velocity flow data. The knowledge gained from this process flow monitoring can consequently be used to renegotiate water disposal charges and maintain IPPC compliance.

Finally, effective and accurate wastewater and trade effluent monitoring can also generate valuable information for ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 50001 energy management certifications.
